Generational Language

"Before Hip Hop Was Hip Hop" gives some great evidence of English as a descriptive language.  Think about your generation's language.  How do teenagers speak today?  What has affected your culture?  Give me some specific examples of slang and generational language in 2010 (school-appropriate, of course).  Compare that to what you read in the essay in class.  Basically, I want your thoughts on teenage language and culture, technology revolution, "Before Hip Hop Was Hip Hop," slang, descriptive language, how English evolves, etc.

Looking forward to reading your brilliance,
Mrs. Davis

  7. Texting, southern people, and anyone that speaks english has their own dialect.

  8. the slang used today is from southern people, northern people, texting, and the need to shorten words.

  9. We southerners pretty much have our own dialects. There's the northern city where they say "wooter" (water) & then we say "satissffaii" (occupy). Everything from the environment of our peers & the media/TV has affected our speech & daily language.

  10. Today teenagers speak a little bit like they did in the short story we read today. some still use those kinds of words and new slang words. Through the development of new technology teenagers have been able to develop new ways of spelling words or new ways to make up a word with a different meaning. For example when people text or sent email they usually do not type formally. They create an abbreviation that has the same meaning.

  11. The way our generation talks today has definately changed over time. There are new slang words. A lot of teens use slang or improper grammer. The media has greatly affected this generation. Some people think slang is bad, but it also shows a person's personality.

  12. I would say that our culture has difinitely influenced slang in teenagers which has seperated us from past generations. This has happened in many previous generations which proves that English is a descriptive languague.
In "Before Hip Hop was Hip Hop," the author says that hip hop was the teenagers' way to communicate regardless of culture and background. I percieve that today teenagers use slang not to just communicate, but to also fit language in a useful and meaningful way into their lives. Also the author said that the teenagers created and influenced hip hop themselves. Today I think that the media influences our culture, and teenagers have just followed the media's trends and have set aside their own personality.

  13. today's generation's modern language is influenced by just about everything, even other languages.it's just like how sometimes i dont say yes i say ja or javohr(german for yes and yes sir) and i hear people say lol and idk and brb and stuff like that all the time.also i call my friends tivarish which means comrade in russian and i have no idea how to spell it.some of today's slang and stuff like it is kinda annoying though

  14. oh yea and cuddler, when Chuck Norris jumps into a pool he doesn't get wet the water gets Chuck Norrised.(this is another form of modern lang. called "Chuck Norris Worship"[Bruce Lee was better])

  15. The way that my generation speaks is the child of internet blogs and 4chan, people abbreviating words and looking for ways to shorten stuff.

  16. I say " lol" and "omg" but like literally say it unconsciously while talking. BUt with lol i dont say l-o-l i say lol like lolipop.

  17. I think our generation still has remainders from previous generations slang. Such as the valley girl talk. Where you say like like you know like totally like LIKE. Another example is the word wicked, or props those both came from previous generations. Our generation now a days is very technologically based and in doing so we find shortcuts to abreviate words such as brb (be right back) all in the name of lazyness and convenience (:

  18. Teenagers today are probably much different from teens a long time ago especially when it comes to slang and how we talk. TV, the radio, texting, and just talking with your friends have influences on this. Over time, we came up with new words & phrases that only our generation can really understand. I use slang all the time and I don't even realize it.

First of all, i'm sorry I reposted the subject, but I forget what i'm supposed to type about everytime I get to the bottom to type. Buuuuuuuuuuu anyways. We teenagers use a whole mess load of da slang. We some slangin' teens. <------see what I did there? Lol. I think all the music I listen to influences the way I speak and how I dress. Sort of. Some specifics of slang is like tight, ballin' (lame), swagger, etc. We use a lot of what was used in the old generation though. Today's Hip-Hop and the story we read compare to be alike in a lot of ways because what was back then, is mostly what us now. If you know what i'm trynna say, dawg. Lol.

  20. Teens use slang bc its ez-er 2 tlk usin' abbreviated wrds/trms instd of typin' everythin' out. This took me all of 20 seconds 2 type.

  21. Our phrases have come from random people making up a random phrase that has spread by word of mouth from place to place. Such as the phrase "cut" to describe when someone is wrong about something. This phrase is usually used to embarass someone who does something wrong. XD. Teenagers speak today based on things they hear the people that inspire them say. Whether this a musician, athlete, or just a person in the population every generation uses different words and every person creates phrases that aren't used everyday.
I also believe that slang today comes from history. The words "fresh" and "clean" and "swagger" came into play before our generation grabbed hold of the words. If it wasn't for past generations, these words might not even be used in today's generation at all.

  22. basically our language has evolved from prescriptive language. We took prescriptive language and reworded it to fit new meanings. Like in the story we read today, we still use rather all or some of those type of slang today, it's just that they might not mean the exact same or does. Some type of slang we use today is words like: dude, filler word. Bro, friend that's a boy. etc. The type of slang we use today has also evolved form things like TV, radio, magazines, and comics and other things that we watch/listen to.

  23. the past and current way our language has or is spoken has changed not neccessarily drastically, but has made quite a change. instead of saying stuff like, hello fair maiden, its yo was up? or other jazz like that.

  24. If someone started talking like Shakesphere people would look like they're crazy.

  25. Yo, Sup?, Maynneee, Dawg!. Our slang has really changed from what Slang was back then. It seems Ours is more centered around Voiolence ,gangs, drugs, and, this is the best i can say it in a school apropiate way of saying it lol but im sure you get my meaning, Perverted jokes. And others are Just silly but it changed how and who we are when we turn into our middle school years. Havent you notice that? I have. Its funny seeing 6th graders talking like there so cool and think they're stupid. we fail to remember though that we were the same way and learned the same new words. i also really like descriptive though. it also allows us to be... Well, us.
@ haley, I think People are funny when they talk in Text talk, i always laugh.

  26. slang and generational words come from the generations before us. I mean we do use certain phrases that other generations have used as slang.

    ReplyDelete
  27. @ ben b.... i agree that we use the some of the same slang terms as people did in the story. for example, the word "hot". back then, they reffered to it as something being cool or awesome. now we refer to it as someone being goodlooking when the literal meaning has to do with temperature.
back in the day, slang was just funny words with random meanings that teenagers used to define who they are. now slang has evoled into violence, gangs, drugs, and phrases with nasty perverted meanings....imamature. i do believe however that some teens still use slang to joke around and have fun being "messed up teens". =P

  29. language has definately changed over the years. personally i still use words from the 80s because im weird like that.

  30. tv, internet, music, and laziness all have an affect on the way we speak. people communicate without spelling out words or making up slang terms to seem cool or just to try to seem like they know what they're talking about, even when nobody else does.

  31. TV, celebbrities, and texting has affected slang. The people that I hang out with speak different than how other teens speak. Some of the slang that is around is swag, fresh, tight, LOL, and many more that I can't think about at this very moment. We also say "like" alot. LIKE when we are trying to give an example. See, I just used it.

  32. i agree that texting and televsion have changed our language, another thing is from people shortening or abbreviating words and then they eventually just use the abbreviations instead of the real words which has kinda formed its own language that we call "SLANG".

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think that everything around us influences how people speak and the slang we use. Including TV, Internet, music, people not really knowing how to spell words and appreviating.

    ReplyDelete
  34. yeah i agree with kamica, everything now influences our language and the way we talk.

  35. I Think Mostly Music Has Influenced Our Slangg :P Rap Id Say Rlly But Tht Is All I Listen To, They Do Use Slang In Songs Like From "Before Hip-Hop" I Hear ATL All The Time or Just A Talkin About Atlanta, GA ;)

  36. Teenage language is always changing. It is influenced by region, media, and social class.
Like txt talk now and gaming language. 1337 speak.

  37. I am not one of those people who really knows what the language is like now. I was what you call a "sheltered" child. The only real slang I know is "beast" and it means awsome or great. I know that slang now adays is used to just confuse anybody who doesn't understand.

I Think That Todayy , Our Personalities And Lives Aree Affected By Our Peers And Environment. Some Of Us Are Afraid Of Expressing Ourselves Because We're Too Concerned About What Our Friends Will Think. Also , Our Influences Are More Diverse Because Of The Different Types Of Media And The Diversity Our Surroundings.

  39. Most teenagers now a days say stuff like "jk" or "brb", our vernacular is a lot less elegant sounding than it used to be!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I grew up with a very heavy Souther, adn that's an accent, and believe me it still shows, but now I don't talk like as much. I've learned nong timew slang such as slick, fine, beast, and "that's whats up!" I have a dentency to talk inappropriately due to being around "the guys" for a long time, and that's played a large role in my vocabulary.

    ReplyDelete
  41. language has evolved a lot through all things like music tv and even teens making fun of people.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Language has deffinetely changed... A LOT! hah, us southerns have our own "talk". For ex. we say ya'll, diner, supper, etc. Northerns say lik, yous, dinner, etc. Also, it has changed throughtout the generation. Like, grovvy, super, gee-witakers, etc. hah

    ReplyDelete
  43. I realize this is late haha, but I might as well do it!
I think that the English language has definentely changed over the years. Our generation has changed the language to be our own. We've made slang, and we've changed our vernacular. Teenagers have even changed everyday clothing and hairstyles. We have different music and clothing. It's almost like we've changed the culture.

  44. Every region of history (haha time and space)it their gramma, that english has existed in, has added different rules and words to fit their needs. For example, the Germanic tribes used a very primitive version. England during the Medival period made it more proper to fit the new ways of innovation. And now, we have slang.
