English II - Antigone Ode I

Welcome back to our blog, Sophomores!

Your first task is to post your paraphrase of Ode 1.  Remember a paraphrase restates the same details in your own words!

Then, I would like for you to thoughtfully reflect on the following questions related to Ode 1 in Antigone.  Please do so in an appropriate and meaningful way.

1) Do you agree with man being nature’s greatest accomplishment?

2) Is our biggest weakness our inability to stop death?

Remember to respond to your peers to create a conversation.  I look forward to seeing your thoughts!

  1. The world has many wonders, but man is the greatest. The sea bows to him and brings him power. The Earth is cover with land that has been worked by horses.
The birds, the beasts, and the fish are all tamed by the man's entangling mind. Even the lions, the most spirited of horses, and the largest bulls fall to his control.
He thinks quickly and conquers nature.
When the law is there, there is peace, but when there is none, chaos erupts. All enemies will get no sympathy from me.

  2. I do not agree that man is the greatest of creations on earth. I believe that woman is the earth's greatest creation, because without them there is no us.
Our biggest weakness is that we think that we can stave off death, but he will come when the time is right, and there is nothing we can do to stop him.

  3. The ode starts off by saying man is the greatest wonder on earth. He has turned nature tame and used it for his own gain. Although in the end no man can escape death for they are just mere mortals. Also it references to Creon about following the law and how important it is to or order turns to chaos.
1)No I believe man is natures worst creation by far. We take, and take from nature slowly destroying it with all our greed. I mean look around now we see all the pollution now when its already almost too far gone.
2)No our biggest weakness isn't that we cannot avoid death but that we cannot accept that we all die eventually. Many people focus so much on death they lose sight of their lives. That is our biggest weakness.

  4. @mormon: I completely agree on you with what you said about death there is nothing we can do to stop it but we tend to forget to live in a sense.

  5. the world has alot of wonders
    but nothing compares to man
even the sea puts him on a throne\blazing paths commanding respect
    even birds and beasts cower
    fish hide in the water
    all tamed by his will
kings of the jungle and plain
    bow before him
    he is smart
    allowing him statecraft
    he denies the elements
    only death can stop him
    work with him or die

  6. Ok. It took me awhile to figure out the meaning/theme in Ode 1 but I think this is what it's telling me.

Out of the many wonders of the world, man is the greatest. He is invincible in all ways. He can tackle and tame even the most fiercest of beasts and animals. Nothing else can be in favor to be higher than he. The only boundary that puts him in his place is inevitable death. The rule and order can be still kept when man follows the laws. When all has been done to keep it away, there's no order or peace or control. It is the fate to have his death.

    1. Yes, I foresee man as nature's greatest accomplishment. Out of all the other animals, we are more sophisticated. The thing that separate man from beast is the ability to communicate (verbally, not just physically). Our other advantage is the ability to reason. When seeing from an animal's standpoint, it's all for survival and going by instinct. We humans do the same thing but in the modern world, it's more controlled. (For the most part we control it unless in the 3rd world).

    2. Death and weakness shouldn't be equally weighted. The "fate" or "timing" of our death is something more or less to be naturally occuring. If it's something like you're in a dire situation where you need to escape, the weakness is not the avoiding of being killed. In that scenario, it's the willpower that you (do or don't) have to escape out of there. The weakness in that is if you'll get your way out of there the best way you possibly can. In the end, it's really all on you.
If it's just ordinary life where you grow old and can't live longer, then death will just happen at some point anyway. It's more of whether or not you can accept the fact your life is at its end. To sum this all up...No, our weakness isn't the inability to stop death.

  7. @nightmareincolor: I guess you're right about that. We do tend to take more than we need to. But for the most part, we are liviing in a developed/advanced society (the western world). It's not just taking resources here and there but it's all about the money. Not saying Im big on business-savvyness but it's more sensible that man can be the worst of creation for greed of $$$. Other than that we do need to sustain our living by taking some here and there from nature itself. Without it (in our present time of living), we can't drive around w/out gas, we cant use computers w/out manipulating even our Elements on Earth. And everything around us (besides Earth Friendly products and services) will have lots and lots of Earth-material. It won't be as bad for us after we figure alternative sources. Also, our man-made things (buildings, cars, etc.) will eventually decay themselves back into nature. Just takes past our own lifetime.

  8. There are many wonders in the world but there is one that stands above the rest. What is it you ask... Well it is called a human. We as humans have tamed the Earth and made it serve our will. Every animal bows to us in some form or the other. Some are used a meat. Others are used for work. Mankind doesn't think it through and then conquers the world. Order=Peace.

No mankind isn't because all we have done in these past few centuries is mess up the world. But i am not one of those extremist that think mankind doesn't belong.

Yes we all think we can so it comes as a shock that we are dying.

  9. Paraphrase:
The world has many wonderful things, but man is at the top of that list, as man has the ability to cross oceans, putting him in charge of everything else. He has also tamed nature, with plows and beasts of burden.
The birds, and the animals, and the fish, and all of the other living things are taken and controlled by man, even the ones
    thought to be untamable.
Man has learned to speak, and how to survive nature, and can
escape everything but death. Man is intelligent, giving him the ability to be good and evil. The good will be well respected, but the wrong should be cast out. And if they are evil, let them not be anywhere near me.
    1) I think that man is probably the most sophisticated thing on earth, but we also invented things like war, so I am not sure that we would be nature's greatest accomplishment. It does seem like nature tries to kill us off with natural disasters, so it cant like us too much.
2)I think that you could say that our greatest weakness could be our inability to avoid death, because it is the only thing we really cant avoid. We have gotten off of our planet, which is something that very few people though would ever happen. We have also lengthened our time on Earth, but until we can get around death, i think it is our biggest weakness.

  10. The world has countless wonders, but
It cannot copmare to those of man.
As rapid as air, thoughts and words flow
Arrows cover the sky and air as a shower and fall softly.
Spears pouring cold, from uphill makes
Everyman feel secure, no one can stand but death.
When the laws are kept, all is good
But, when the laws are broken, the city falls.

    1. Man being nature's greatest accomplishment? Yes. Man can do as much good, as they an do evil. This means that they can do almost anything..anything they please. They can do great things and cause total distruction.

    2. Bigist weakness unable to stop death? Yes, death is all around us and no matter how hard we try we can never defeat, we can only postpone the due date. Death is a fight that can never be won, but can be cheated, but in the end all shall die.

  11. Paraphrase: Man is the greatest creation on Earth despite all the other wonders in the world. Man is powerful and can tame the wildest beast and handle any raging nature. Everything bows down to man. Though man (good or evil) is intelligent, not even the most intelligent man could escape death. Also, a smart man that has laws should have respect from others while a man that allows chaos should have none.

1.) I'm on the fence because I can see how man is and isn't nature's greatest accomplishment. We are pretty smart, but like said in some of the comments above, we have also helped destroy nature. Maybe we're just too smart for our own good...
2.) I don't think so. Death happens, it's the circle of life. A person can only do so much to extend their life. On a side-note, wanting to live a longer life is not a weakness either.

  12. The world's wonders are endless, but man is the most wonderful. The natural forces bend to his will.Earth mourns because of the ploughing of the fields by forever working animals.
All the creatures are tamed by his mind's net.All creatures resign to or are broken by him.
He fashions words and thought to his will.
    His skills deflect Death itself

1.No, because man isn't an accomplishment of nature
2.No.Our biggest weakness is our inability to control ourselves

  13. 1.)I think that man is nature's greatest accomplishment because as far as evolution is concerned man is an extremely unlikely creature and it's an incredibly unlikely occurrence that a creature as intelligent as man and as planet changing as man.

2.) Death is not man's greatest weakness, our inability to unite everyone together for a cause is our greatest weakness.

  14. Man is the most wonderous of the wonders. he can make the sea calm and mold the earth with a plow. man can tame any animal with his intelligance. man speaks and thainks fast. he make shelter and can protect himself from anything but death. when man's laws are kept society wont fall. so i will never side with a law breaking man.

  15. 1) I think that man is natures greatest acomplishment. If you think of the way that the human body is composed, so intricate, it is beautiful in the way that it all works together without a terrable fail. and all that we accomplish with these bodies and minds how could anyone think that we arnt the most awesome thing ever.

    2) yes. cause we can do like everything else. we're cool like that

    ReplyDelete
  16. It said that man is the worlds greatest creation and that all animals bow to it's might. It also states that death is inevitable for all men. Lastly, laws were meant to follow, and to be broken causes no good.

    1. I think man is not man's greatest invention. Man is too unappreciative to our mother Earth to be considered its greatest invention. We pollute, destroy, enslave, and obsess over the dumbest things. There are certainly more worthy creations.

    2. Our greatest weakness is not the inability to escape death. We have plenty of other holes for that to be it. Quite frankly, it's not even a true weakness. Knowing death can happen at any moment helps you appreciate life.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Man is the greatest thing in question its intelligence is followed by all. Many can protect themselves from all but the unavoidable death. Man makes law to be followed for civil reasons without such man is just another beast. Laws must be obeyed or else...

    1) I Think *Wo*man Are the best invention of nature, I think without the craft of humans and intelligence some are able to wield that many things wouldn't be right. Sure we destroy things and make mistakes but that doesn't mean we are no a great accomplishment to nature we above most other creatures and of a higher way, our standards have helped other creatures and nature as well as harmed. We are not guided by instinct we have the ability to think and create therefore we are the superior invention of nature.

2)No, our biggest weakness is not that we can't stop death its more or less the fact we create death. Everyone will die at some point so a flaw of ours is the worrying we put into that at some points but of all things we create most of the death that is caused that could be prevented which is enough of a weakness that we cant prevent it. As in Antigone many people just kill each other for war or the law :( that is totally weak :/.

  18. Humans, can manipulate nature to our benefit. We can control animals to do our work. We can use our intelligent minds to make amazing results. Man can do good and evil though, and we all die eventually.

    1. I dont think we are the greatest accomplishment of nature because we destroy it. I do believe that we are accomplished in the sense that we have the most evolved mind in nature though.

    2. I dont believe its a weakness because everything will die at some point no matter what you are. Our weaknesses are what bring us down in life, not that we will eventually die.

  19. None of the infinite wonders of the world are greater than man
The sea moves out of the boat’s way
    The Earth is fixed
The work of horses is a long time
The birds and animals stay in the trees
    He understands it all
    He’s very busy minded
He is over the states coming together
He is safe from all but death
His city is great without rebels
But the city is torn when laws are broken
I will forever hate the criminal
And we shall never have like minds

    1. No, I think things that don’t cause the horrific catastrophes that we cause are much better. We are by far the most intelligent but we lack the appreciation and respect that would make us greater.
    2. No, I don’t think the inability to stop death is a weakness at all. Death is a natural process of life. I don’t believe anyone is able to invent a way to avoid death. I believe our weakness is that we focus so much on death that we forget to think about the difference we should be making in the present. This goes back to the first question, because if we made a difference in our daily lives we would be much greater than we currently stand.

  20. The world is great and all, but man is what makes it awesome. Man can overcome the sea's dangers by sailing. He farms with the plow pulled by his horses, allowing him to not do work.
Animals fear man. They know man is better than them, and obey him.
He can think fast, and put these thoughts to good use by creating tools and weapons that protect him from everything except death.
Thinking is power! But man has to choose to use it for good or for evil. Use it for good, and you will flourish, but use it for bad, and you will be nothing. Yes, man can think, but those thoughts aren't controlled, and can make man unwanted.

1-Man has intelligence above all other things in our World, but that doesn't make us more wonderful than anything else. Everything is wondrous in it's own way.
2- The inability to stop death is not a weakness, but is just the ways the World works. If man could stop death, chaos would break out across the World, and we would have even more weaknesses.

  21. Many different things walk this Earth,
but none so righteous as man.
He over comes the toughest obstacle,
    the gods throuw at him.
Animals cower in fear over his power,
    and obey.
Man has taught the world language,
    thought, law, war, and medicine;
    only death avoids his grasp.
With great power comes great responsibilty.
Man's power must be chosen for good or evil.
Good comes to those who use it correctly.
Suffering comes to those who try to escape the Gods' eye.

1.) Man is nature's Frankenstein: it seemed like a good idea at first, then it went downhill from there. In the path of natural selection, nature has created a being that has the ability to conquer itself:being a threat to anything in its path.(Man,who's side am I on?)
2.)Our inability to stop death is the one thing that prevents our destruction. If man was to live forever, we would starve ourselves of resources, wars will start, and the world would rebel against itself. The world would literally be a living he__.We are already destryoing the world with habitat destruction and pollution: lets not add another page to the list.

  22. Paraphrase: There are many wonders on the Earth, but none as great as Man. He can survive anything the Gods put in their way. Man has introduced many educational factors to Earth. Man is safe from all but DEATH!
1.Yes because we have come up with ways top use resources bestowed upon Earth in helpful ways and overcome many obstacles tossed in our way.
2.Yes because no matter how powerful and almighty man is, we are mortal and will someday day.
